New York Blood Center
Occupying a space that was previously used as a distribution warehouse, the converted New York Blood Center now handles all critical blood processing, storage and distribution operations for the New York City region, providing lifesaving blood products as well as clinical and transfusion services to nearly 200 hospitals throughout New York and New Jersey.
Repurpose a warehouse into a state-of-the-art facility. The project required foundation and structural upgrades along with complete infrastructure. Architecturally, we upgraded the building's block and brick façade with a combination of metal panels and window wall, and developed a galleria-style interior with 25-foot ceilings, skylights and custom column covers. We also upgraded the facility's mechanical and utility infrastructures for gas, sewer and electric.
The project was a fast-track build-out, requiring us to transform an existing space into a highly efficient, modern blood collection facility. To accommodate the facility's blood storage requirements, we created a lab environment, which required the installation of multiple walk-in boxes and freezers capable of storing product at temperatures ranging from -30ºC to +4ºC.
The New York Blood Center won Real Estate and Construction Review’s 2008 Building of America Award and the 2008 Queens Chamber of Commerce Building Award.
