National Intrepid Center of Excellence
In early 2008, the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund (IFHF) was approached by the U.S. military to reprise their donation of the Center for the Intrepid in San Antonio, Texas with a new project dedicated to the study of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). IFHF's goal for the project was to design the world's preeminent brain trauma center. Plaza was responsible for managing every detail from early development through move-in.
Design and build a world-class research, education and treatment center utilizing the latest technologies available (and some not yet designed) in sufficient time to be of use to soldiers involved in conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as any veterans affected. The planning and design of the center began in early 2008. Construction was completed in June 2010.
With the economic downturn immediately following the start of the project, we were tasked with maintaining the state-of-the-art design, but keeping costs within a target budget that was cut by 15%. Through innovative thinking in the programming of the building, value engineering virtually every major system, and working closely with contractors and subcontractors to reduce risk and optimize efficiency, we were able to deliver the project on time and under the revised budget, as a LEED silver project.
