The Robert K. Kraft Center for Jewish Life,
Columbia University
606 West 115th Street, New York, NY
Plaza Construction Corporation was selected by Columbia University to
build the new 28,000 SF Robert Kraft Family Center for Jewish Student
Life, an educational, religious and social center that serves more than
2,000 students. The new facility, constructed between Broadway and
Riverside Drive at Columbia University, provides service to more than 30
student groups.
Specific architectural features
of this building reflect
aspects of Jewish culture.
For example, many elements
of the new structure
are sheathed in Jerusalem
stone, the same material
that covers all buildings in
Jerusalem by official mandate.
Jerusalem stone
extends to the full height of
the student center to
emphasize the wall as a
strong exterior element.
The completed center
features a main lobby, a
375-seat grand hall, student
lounges, a synagogue,
a study with a
3,000 volume library and
a main library with artistically
etched French
doors and conference
rooms. There is also a
terrace on the 5th floor,
in addition to the numerous
offices and guest
suites which are serviced
by the connecting auxilary
staircase through the
narrow, six-story structure.
