New York University - Wagner School of Public Service
295 Lafayette Street, New York, NY
Plaza Construction Corporation was selected as the Construction Manager
for New York University's fit-out of the Wagner School of Public Service
located in the historic Puck Building. The new space consisted of Dean &
faculty offices, lecture rooms & student lounges on two levels. Listed on
the National Historic Register, this Landmark building hosted some unique
& interesting challenges. Originally built in 1885, numerous remodeling
and additions over the years left the building in its current state of three
structures combined in to one. Because of this, both floors were installed
over a raised floor system in order to create a level surface. Plaza also
coordinated the installation of the school's mechanical rooms & exterior
louvers while maintaining the building’s Landmark status.
Another of the many project challenges
was shoring up the building’s 120-year
old terra cotta arch slab to create a 40
x 40-foot opening, and install a floating steel
& glass stair case. The Wagner School
of Public Service boasts over 4,000 SF of
custom high-end glass and a 30-foot, two-story
decorative media feature wall.
In order to enlarge an entrance way for
the original structure to a later addition,
Plaza then created a 25-foot opening
in the 120 year old 3-foot thick brick
load-bearing wall. Because of the
building’s limited freight elevator, steel
beams had to be boomed in through
windows to support two folding wall
systems.
Plaza successfully maintained the building’s
original characteristics and charm
while installing the latest in design &
technology.
