New York University Student Housing
110 East 14th Street, New York, NY
Plaza Construction Corporation provided General Contracting services for
the 215,000 SF New York University 14th Street Dormitory, located on the
site of the former Luchow's Restaurant on East 14th Street. The project
provided much needed dorm space for NYU students and met several construction
challenges.
Existing site conditions, heavy neighborhood traffic and positioning of the
building appropriately into the neighborhood had to be addressed by Plaza
during the planning stages. During the construction of the building, special
attention had to be given to the installation of the pre-cast concrete
facade.
The dormitory is also one of the first buildings constructed in Manhattan
under the newly enacted seismic requirements of the New York City building
codes. To comply with these regulations, Plaza was required to use 30%
more reinforcing steel, 4,000 PSI lightweight concrete and 5,000-PSI stone
concrete.
The building's exterior features include a pre-cast truss system curtain
wall, punched aluminum framed
windows and a rubberized
asphalt membrane
roof. Interior features include
residential space for 600
beds, administrative facilities,
a kitchen / cafeteria, and
mechanical equipment storage
areas sufficient for all the
heating, cooling and communications
equipment.
The
new dormitory has a scenic
court yard covered by a 2-story, self-supporting 1,000 SF
tensile truss skylight made of
glass and steel, allowing the
students to enjoy the space year round.
With careful planning and
superior use of the site and
its surroundings, Plaza topped
out the building on time. John
Rutigliano, Director of
Planning and Construction for NYU, said Plaza Construction Corporation
"performed admirably" in completing a difficult construction project.
