1710 Steinway Street,
Astoria, NY
Plaza Construction Corporation was selected as the Architectural, Civil, Structural Subcontractor by Shaw, Stone & Webster for the construction of a 2-on-1
combined cycle power plant. Astoria Energy, a new electric generating facility in Astoria, NY, is New York City’s largest new power plant in more than 25
years. Astoria Energy is located in the heart of the Queens load pocket, which is an area that has a high demand for power but insufficient ability to
transmit power into the area at times of peak demand.
Astoria Energy uses state-of-the-art, natural gas fueled, combined cycle technology to produce 1,000 megawatts of power – enough to supply one million
customers. Construction of the first 500-megawatts was commenced with commercial operation in spring 2006.
Plaza's scope of work consisted of final de-gassing of the existing 50 million gallon bulk fuel storage facility, demolition of the existing facility, soil
erosion protection, site grading and development, auger cast piles, concrete foundations, underground utilities, bolted steel demineralized and fire
suppression water tanks, turnkey pre-engineered sound attenuation buildings to house the steam and combustion turbines, heat recovery steam generators and
gas fuel compressors, pipe racks and final site development. Other management services included coordination activities with the air cooled condenser, heat
recovery steam generator and main line/BOP subcontractors, and ancillary support services for Shaw, Stone & Webster.
