Random House, Inc. (Core & Shell)
1745 Broadway, New York, NY
Plaza Construction Corporation was selected by The Related Companies
to serve as Construction Manager for the new 50-story mixed-use tower
that serves as the World Headquarters of Random House, Inc. Random
House is the world's largest English language general trade book publisher.
The new mixed-use tower
consists of 25 floors (580,000
SF) of single use commercial
space and 23 floors of highend
residential condominium
apartments (130 units). The
building also includes 35,000
SF of retail space and a 130-car parking garage. The exterior
façade consists of panelized
curtainwall units with
stone and glass at the commercial
base and all glass at
the residential tower.
One of the unique tasks Plaza
successfully managed was the
development and coordination
of the logistics required to
marry the steel commercial
structure with the cast in
place residential tower.
Because of the nature of the
building's design, Plaza
installed a water-filled tuned
mass damper located at the
top of the building to control
the building's acceleration.
Due to the buildings close
proximity to the Broadway
subway tunnels, extensive shoring and bracing was required for the
excavation and foundation work.
Plaza made use of its managerial expertise to coordinate the construction
of the core and shell without impacting the Random House interior
fit-out and residential apartment fit-out.
The building has recieved several awards most notably, the 2002 Award
of Merit for Best Mixed-Use Building of the Year.
